Consider the Gospel

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." -Ephesians 2:8-9

Wedding Invitation
Two young women are invited to a wedding, but only one confirms by RSVP that she will be attending. What happens to the other woman who forgets to RSVP?

Added December 2009

There was once a young woman who knew a couple that was soon to be married. The couple had set a date for their wedding, and sent out invitations. This young woman, Anne, received an invitation. She was very excited when she received it. The invitation read that an RSVP was necessary to attend the wedding. Right away, Anne, sent an RSVP by mail to the couple to secure herself a spot at the wedding.

On the same day, another woman, Michelle, received an invitation to the same wedding. Michelle read through the invitation and also found that an RSVP was required. She decided she would send an RSVP later- when she had more time. After all, the wedding was still a few months away.

As the couple began receiving RSVP’s from their wedding, they started to plan accordingly. They purchased enough food for all of their guests and made sure to have enough space for them. As the deadline for the RSVP’s passed, all of the wedding details were finalized.

On the day of the wedding, guests began to file in through the lobby and sign their names in the guest book. They took pre-printed name tags and were seated in their assigned seating. Anne came in and signed her name. She managed to find her name tag and get seated. It was a glorious occasion! She was very excited about the wedding and had her best dress on.

About 15 minutes later, Michelle stumbled through the door. She found an usher and explained that she forgot about the RSVP, but still wanted to come to the wedding. The usher tried to explain that there was only enough room for the RSVP’s. They had booked a church venue to accommodate all of the guests and prepared just enough food for them.

Michelle could not believe it. How could they deny her just because of the RSVP? Surely, she could squeeze in unnoticed. She left the usher and made her way through the thick group of guests to the main entrance to the seating. Her eyes met the two ushers at the entrance. They asked her to bring her name tag. The sign on the door read: “Admittance with Name Tag Only”. She tried to explain that she did not have one. The ushers told her she could not enter without a name tag. She tried to reason with them, but found that there was no room for her among the other guests.

She decided to leave. She was saddened by her choice to not RSVP. Now she had to miss the wedding.

Jesus is going to have such an event in Heaven. He has sent us all invitations. Have you RSVP’ed to His call? Have you secured your spot in Heaven? It is important that you not put it off till the last minute like Michelle did. Instead, be sure to respond quickly as Anne did. You can’t get to Heaven any other way. The only way is through the ‘RSVP’. What is the “RSVP”?

Jesus sent us all an invitation. That invitation is called the ‘Gospel’. The Gospel states that we all have sinned against God. Because God can’t live in sin, He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, down into the world to forgive us of our sins. He is giving us a free invitation to take away our sins. It is up to us to acknowledge that we have sinned, and that only Jesus can take our sin away. Once we tell Jesus that we are sorry for what we have done, and want to live a life pleasing to God, then He will take away our sins.

It is as simple as that. A prayer- talking to Jesus! Ask Jesus today!
